Western Front (France) 1940
Buy the Summer of 1940 six Sturmartillerie Batteries were formed (640, 659, 660, 665, 666 and 667).   Each battery consisted of six assault guns (three platoons of two assault guns each).

The 659, 660 & 665 served as independent batteries during the
French Campaign. Sturmartillerie Batterie 640 became organic to Infantry Regiment Grossdeutschland and was renamed to 16th Sturmartillerie Batterie.  The last six assault guns were issued to SS Sturmartillerie Batterir of Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler division.

The 666 & 667 didn't see combat in
France.
